The remaining people have\u00a0eyes in the blue, hazel, amber, or green families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While grey eyes are extremely uncommon, they are not the rarest eye colour. To give you an idea of how rare that is, here\u2019s how eye colours are distributed worldwide:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Brown<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 70% to 80%\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Blue<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 8% to 10%\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Hazel\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 5%\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Amber\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 5%\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Grey\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 3%\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Green\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 2%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-where-do-grey-eyes-come-from\">Where do\u00a0grey eyes\u00a0come from?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Like other eye colours,\u00a0grey eyes\u00a0are the product of genetics and melanin. Melanin is the pigment that gives your skin, hair, and eyes unique shades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The genetics you inherit help\u00a0determine\u00a0your eye colour. If one or both of your parents have grey eyes,\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0more likely to have them too.\u00a0The shade of grey depends on the amount and type of melanin in your iris, which your genes also help\u00a0determine. People with more melanin have darker eyes, and those with less melanin have lighter eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Grey eyes, no matter the shade, have less melanin than brown eyes and other dark eye colours.\u00a0In fact, they may have\u00a0very little\u00a0or even no melanin in them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-collagen-in-grey-eyes\">Collagen in grey eyes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Another thing that makes grey eyes so remarkable is the large amount of a\u00a0protein known as collagen. Collagen\u00a0is responsible for\u00a0giving structure and sturdiness to parts of the body such as the bones, tissues, and muscles. It also gives the eyes their structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\u00a0stroma (the front layer of the iris)\u00a0in\u00a0grey eyes\u00a0contains\u00a0more collagen than other eye colours. Eyes appear\u00a0more grey\u00a0due to the way light scatters off the large amount of collagen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-medical-and-other-causes-for-eyes-to-turn-grey\">Medical and other causes for eyes to turn grey<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Certain medical issues can affect the colour of your eyes. Some can make the eyes appear darker, and others can make them appear duller or\u00a0more grey. Here are some\u00a0possible causes\u00a0of grey eyes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-cataracts\">Cataracts<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As you age, the proteins found in the eye\u2019s natural crystalline lens can deteriorate, causing a clouding of the lens. This clouding is called a cataract.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cataracts can\u00a0cause blurriness or make the world seem less colourful. They can also make a person\u2019s\u00a0eyes appear cloudy, which may resemble a grey iris.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-arcus-senilis\">Arcus senilis<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Over time, the cornea may collect fatty deposits around its edges. These deposits can form a grey ring around the iris. This is a condition called arcus senilis. It\u00a0doesn\u2019t\u00a0usually\u00a0impact\u00a0your vision, but it can cause the eye to look like\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0changing colour. The ring may also look white or blue, depending on the case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-ocular-argyrosis\">Ocular\u00a0argyrosis<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When a person\u2019s body is exposed to a significant amount of silver, a condition called argyria may develop. This rare condition causes the skin to turn a bluish or greyish colour over time due to chronic silver toxicity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When argyria affects the eye(s), it can cause a grey\u00a0discoloration. When it only affects the eyes (and no other body parts),\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0called\u00a0argyrosis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Argyrosis\u00a0is very uncommon. However, you may be at a higher risk of developing\u00a0argyrosis\u00a0if you handle silver in a factory, have a dental filling\u00a0containing\u00a0amalgam, or take medication that\u00a0contains\u00a0silver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-disease-or-injury-of-the-cornea\">Disease or injury of the cornea<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Corneal scarring can create a hazy layer on the iris, making it look lighter than usual. The lighter discoloration may occur due to corneal injury, ulcers, infection, swelling, or disease. Speak with your eye doctor promptly if you notice any unusual discoloration in your eye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"700\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clearly.ca\/thelook\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/grey-eyes-2.avif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-33033\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.clearly.ca\/thelook\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/grey-eyes-2.avif 900w, https:\/\/www.clearly.ca\/thelook\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/grey-eyes-2-300x233.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.clearly.ca\/thelook\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/grey-eyes-2-768x597.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.clearly.ca\/thelook\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/grey-eyes-2-600x467.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.clearly.ca\/thelook\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/grey-eyes-2-746x580.jpg 746w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-are-grey-spots-on-the-white-of-the-eye\">What are grey spots on the white of the eye?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Grey spots may appear on the white part of the eye (the sclera)&nbsp;as a result of:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Age-related changes\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Eye injuries\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Eye infections\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dry eyes\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Congenital eye conditions\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In some cases, the spots may be harmless, but in other cases, they may be a cause for\u00a0serious concern. Contact your\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.clearly.ca\/en-ca\/store-locator\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">eye doctor<\/a>\u00a0as soon as possible if you notice any grey spots or other discoloration in your eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-grey-coloured-contacts\">Grey coloured contacts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0have grey eyes, but you love their look, you may want to consider trying\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.clearly.ca\/en-ca\/contact-lenses\/coloured-contacts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">coloured contacts<\/a>. Your eye doctor can describe the process for getting new contacts and\u00a0determine\u00a0if\u00a0they\u2019d\u00a0be a good\u00a0option\u00a0for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if you\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0need vision correction,\u00a0you\u2019ll\u00a0need a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.clearly.ca\/thelook\/how-to-read-glasses-contact-lens-prescriptions#read-contacts-prescription\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">contact lens prescription<\/a>\u00a0from your doctor to ensure the lenses you order will fit properly.
